Matar Mbaye, better known as COOLARTMC, is a young Senegalese rapper. While going to school, COOLARTMC became immersed in hip hop culture and fell in love with rap, which he incorporated into his studies in 1996.
Each individual has a story and a destiny. For COOLARTMC, the inspiration for his music comes from the struggle, strength, courage, and patience above all else. In the beginning, COOLARTMC was drawn to the empowerment and political expression of hip hop. Coming from the project slums of Thiaroye (along the coast outside of Dakar), he created a group with two friends: Bidew Bi. The crew has since gone its separate ways.
In 1998, COOLARTMC began his solo career. His struggles have been great. Recording equipment and studio time is hard to come by in the slums. However, COOLARTMC has persevered through it all. He looks to the future with high hopes and ambition.
COOLARTMC is a socially-conscious underground rapper with more than ten years experience in the Senegalese hip hop community. . He has also begun to organize his own concerts and events for youth in the slums, especially in Thiaroye, COOLARTMC's home town. His first concert, entitled 'Son et Lumiere' was extremely successful.
